Snow In Houston 2011
Snow In Houston 2011
All Weather Reports say there will be Snow.
Facebook friends are flipping out, Twitter friends are losing their minds on this. All weather reports are saying more snow in Houston than we have had in many decades.
Googles shows snow in Houston being quite likely before or by Friday February 4th 2011.
Rumors are saying up to 3 inches of snow.
I have not seen three inches of snow in Houston since 1986 I believe, and that really wasn’t Houston. That was a bit north of Houston, and the snow was only seen on the grass and on cars and rooftops. All of the streets were just wet and slightly icy. Tow trucks had plenty of work.
Houston is not prepared for snow or icy road conditions. Our tires are selected for rainy conditions, at best. Most houses here have electric heating. So rolling blackouts could lead to a lot of people being very cold.
Not many hills in Houston for sledding and things like that. but a bicycle can really be fun on the ice and in snow. Not really so much for a ten speed, though. Tires are too thin and tread is finer. Skateboards, now that is a whole other sport there.
Last snow Houston, I was in my early teens. My friends and I put plastic bags on our feet outside of our socks and then put our shoes on over top. We bundled up deep in cloths and threw mud slush snow at each other till the last bit melted. The snow happened while we were asleep and was melted by 10 am. We woke up at about 7 am when the first person scream “IT SNOWED!!!”. We all jumped on our skateboards and headed to the closed down hardware store. We knew the parking lot would be frozen and the lot around would be covered in snow. It was. you can go ahead and imagine the fun.
Make sure you warm your car up before going to work, Thaw that windshield and back window really good before you hit the road. Bring something outside to scrape the snow off your windows, do not use hot water. That glass will crack. Leave plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you. You don’t know where the ice may be, and neither does the guy in front of you.
Well reports are saying from Baytown just south of Houston, up to Livingston Texas we could see a rang of 2 inches snow up to 6 inches of snow. For Snow in Houston up to 2 inches is a stellar event. If we see 2 inches or more, this Houston snow 2011 could go down in history to be brought up every time cold weather comes to Houston area.
Mark the date and watch the sky and watch the ground, lets see if we get more than the flurries we had last year. Friday February 4th 2011, Houston’s first Snow day.
Cover your plants, Bring your pets in. Drive slow, especially over bridges. Slow down early for intersections. Be careful with your room heaters, space heaters and heating blankets. Set your home heaters on a reasonable level. Don’t bet on the chance of a ride in a plane today. Probably not very likely. Houston kinda shuts down when it drops two little snow flurries from the sky
Oh and if you can, get some pictures.
**Update Feb 3rd 10pm**
News just updated saying that the snow will be followed by rain and then the sun will be out and nice just after 12 noon.
